Obama “Jobs” Bill Creates More Senate Bipartisanship

Posted by John Hitchcock on 2011/10/20

The AP article from Hot Air Headlines:

Obama’s three-day bus tour through North Carolina and Virginia — states crucial to his re-election race next year — didn’t change any minds among Senate Republicans, who filibustered Obama’s latest jobs measure to death just as they killed his broader $447 billion jobs plan last week.

The 50-50 vote came in relation to a motion to simply take up the bill and fell well short of the 60 needed to break a filibuster. Democrats Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut broke with Obama on the vote. Two Democrats who voted with the president, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana, however, said they couldn’t support the underlying Obama plan unless it’s changed.

Obama’s demagoguery of his “jobs” bill campaign tactic — which he created specifically for the campaign and not to actually pass muster — fails miserably as even Democrats are voting against taking it up for discussion in the Senate. So, yes, Obama is in fact creating bipartisanship: the bipartisan rejection of his campaign-tactic false “jobs” bill.

Associated Press Calls Out Barack Obama

Posted by John Hitchcock on 2011/10/10

Barack Obama’s campaign tactic of a “jobs” bill and his continuous dishonest spinning of it is too much for even the Associated Press to carry his water. Ed Morrissey has the story.

Last week, the Associated Press’ fact check of a speech implied that Barack Obama might be losing touch with reality. Today, they make the argument more explicit in reporting on Obama’s push on his new jobs bill. Their headline reads “Obama’s jobs bill sales pitch disconnects rhetoric, reality,” and they take him to task for it (via Rob Port):

When Obama accuses Republicans of standing in the way of his nearly $450 billion plan, he ignores the fact that his own party has struggled to unite behind the proposal.

When the president says Republicans haven’t explained what they oppose in the plan, he skips over the fact that Republicans who control the House actually have done that in detail.

And when he calls on Congress to “pass this bill now,” he slides past the point that Democrats control the Senate and were never prepared to move immediately, given other priorities. Senators are expected to vote Tuesday on opening debate on the bill, a month after the president unveiled it with a call for its immediate passage.

The AP concludes that Obama is campaigning, not governing, which has become painfully obvious ever since his speech to a joint session of Congress a month ago. The bill itself contains a number of poison pills that even his own party rejected in 2009, when Democrats had full control of Washington. In fact, Senate Democrats have had to change the rules to keep Obama’s bill from getting a vote at all, not because Republicans oppose it but because a number of Democrats oppose it as well, at least in the form Obama has been pushing the last four weeks.

When the Chicago Thug is so far out to sea that even the Associated Press refuses to carry water for him, you know he’s definitely gone. It’s getting to the point that the normally sycophantic mainstream media can no longer shill for him and maintain what they believe to be their integrity. What remains of his fawning masses are his ever-thinning ranks of delusional lemmings, which are becoming ever more delusional and ever more lemming as time passes. Obama has an absolutely huge problem of his own making. There is a litany of lies, corruption, collusion, obstruction of justice in his wake.

  • The “jobs” bill and the propaganda that even the press can’t carry.
  • Fast and Furious, involving ATF, DOJ, White House, FBI and others, consisting of over 2,000 guns allowed to be illegally bought (ATF actually illegally selling them to the illegal buyers), illegally walked across the border into Mexico, and over 200 dead bodies on both sides of the border.
  • Punishing the whistle blowers by demoting them, trying to engulf those with integrity with the dirty corruption, promoting those heavily involved in the criminal activity and bringing them closer to the DOJ command center to keep a better watch on them.
  • Lying to Congress, refusing to release documents, providing documents to Congress so heavily redacted as to be of no worth, refusing to allow other members of the departments to testify before Congress.
  • Solyndra, LightSquared, SolarReserve, First Solar, SunPower, the 5 billion dollars in Federal Loan guarantees going out on the very last day of operation, benefiting the Obama campaign contributors and bundlers. And we’re just scratching the surface with these.
  • All manner of other corrupt activity.

Soon, all that will be left of Obama’s delusional lemmings will be only the most delusional of all and the most lemming of all. No reasonable person will be able to carry Obama’s water and still maintain any sense of propriety.

UPDATE
Speaking of lemmings, Rebelpundit has video of Occupy Chicago. (HT Hot Air)

Harry Reid Goes Nukular

Posted by John Hitchcock on 2011/10/09

And it could very well back-fire on him — in the short term, and the long term.

In an all-out effort to prevent the Senate Republicans from forcing a vote on Barack Obama’s “jobs” bill, Harry Reid has pulled out all the stops, including using the “nuclear” option. In a move that upset over 100 years of precedent and changed the rules on the fly without consulting Republicans, Harry Reid and 50 other Democrats decided to change the rules and not permit an amendment after a cloture vote, after the Senate Parliamentarian had declared Republicans had that right. And the amendment the Republicans wanted to offer was Barack Obama’s “jobs” bill that Barack Obama has been constantly demanding “pass this now”. That’s right, Democrat Harry Reid is refusing to allow Democrat Barack Obama’s “jobs” bill to even be voted on.

As Allahpundit said:

Apparently, to spare The One the humiliation of having members of his own party vote no on the PassThisBillRightAway Act of 2011, Reid freaked out and nuked the GOP’s right to offer amendments entirely. That’s how much of a fiasco O’s jobs plan is right now: Simply to avoid having to vote on it, longstanding Senate rules are being rewritten on the fly by … his own party.

But when you detonate a nuclear device in your own kitchen, you have to expect the resultant fallout. Ed Morrissey quotes The Hill:

Senate Republicans vow they will retaliate for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) decision to unilaterally change the Senate’s rules Thursday without prior warning or negotiation.

Republican aides say their bosses will now be even more reluctant to allow the Senate to conduct routine business by unanimous consent, forcing Reid to gather 60 votes for even the most mundane matters.

“Reid fired a major salvo and it’s hard to imagine a return shot won’t be fired. Maybe over the weekend they’ll come up with something and try to make it less worse than it already is,” said a Senate GOP leadership aide. …

Triggering what has come to be known as the chamber’s “nuclear option,” Reid overturned Senate precedent that allowed Republicans to force votes to proceed to non-germane amendments. He did so by voting with 50 of his Democratic colleagues to overturn a ruling by the Senate parliamentarian.

The controversial procedural tactic hasn’t been used in years. In a chamber where it requires the consent of all 100 senators to dispense with the reading of a bill, changing the rules unilaterally is considered bad form.

Harry Reid (D – NV) is trying to prevent the fallout by having a little get-together to discuss things and smooth things over. But Republicans likely won’t buy it this time around. You see, Harry Reid made Republicans an offer at the beginning of the year, which Republicans accepted. Then Harry Reid acted like a Democrat.

When Ronald Reagan approved the Democrats’ tax increases, it was based on Democrat promises of cutting 3 dollars in spending for 1 dollar in tax increases. The Democrats broke that promise immediately. Ed Morrissey notes:

At the beginning of the year, Reid and McConnell worked out an agreement to allow Republicans to offer limited amounts of amendments while Republicans promised to stop filibusters on motions to proceed (as opposed to motions to close debate and vote) unless the bill in question was very controversial. All year long, though, Reid has aggressively filled the amendment “trees” to keep Republican amendments from being considered, which had already angered the GOP caucus. After dropping this bombshell on them with no warning and no negotiation, Republicans aren’t going to be in a mood to attend Reid’s venting session or trust him to keep his word at all.

So Harry Reid went Democrat and broke his promise, what’s new? And he thinks he can prevent nuclear fallout from his nuclear blast by making even more promises he knows he’ll be going Democrat and breaking? Expect the Senate to get even more bogged down now than it was before. And come 2013 when Republicans are once again in the majority, expect the Reid precedent to be remembered and used, much to the dismay of Harry Reid and the Democrats who set that precedent.

Senator Jim DeMint On Obama’s Porkulus II

Posted by John Hitchcock on 2011/10/06

From Senator DeMint‘s FaceBook page:

President Obama asked why many oppose his new big spending stimulus. Simple, because his first spending stimulus made things worse, and left us with high unemployment and massive national debt. Obama & Democrats real fight isn’t with Republicans, its with reality. 3 years of failed Obama policies have hurt our economy. The real question for everyone is: Are you better off than you were $4 trillion ago?

Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid blocked a vote in the Senate on Obama’s Porkulus II bill because he knows with 53 Senators on his side of the aisle, he’d be lucky to get into the mid-40s in the vote. Reid can’t afford to let an actual vote occur because it would destroy Obama’s lie that Republicans oppose it but everyone else wants it or something like that. Reid can’t afford to let an actual vote occur because it would seriously harm multiple Democrat Senators’ election chances — because a “yes” vote on Porkulus II would bring a “no” vote in the voting booths across the country. It’s also why Harry Reid (D – NV) has refused to even attempt a Federal Budget since April, 2009 — in direct violation of Federal Law and Constitutional responsibilities. If he were to introduce a Budget, Democrats would be skewered in the voting booths for their profligate spending.

Oh, by the way, Harry Reid (D – NV) used a technique called “filling the tree” to prevent Porkulus II from being added as an amendment to a current Senate Bill. “Filling the tree,” a Parliamentary maneuver Harry Reid (D – NV) has used with far greater frequency in the last 3 years than ever before, is where the total number of amendments allowed on a Bill is filled with your own Party’s amendments, preventing the opposition Party the opportunity to add amendments.

Harry Reid Blocks Vote On Obama “Jobs” Bill

Posted by John Hitchcock on 2011/10/05

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R – KY) tried to bring up Barack Obama’s Democrat slush fund (but let’s call it a “jobs” bill) for a Senate vote yesterday, but Harry Reid (D – NV) refused to allow it. That’s right, the “jobs” bill that Barack Obama has said “pass it now”, “vote on it now” is being blocked by DEMOCRAT Senator Harry Reid while Obama is out on the campaign trail castigating Republicans.

From The Hill:

In a lively spat on the Senate floor Tuesday, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) attempted call up President Obama’s jobs plan for an immediate vote in the upper chamber.

However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who supports the legislation, blocked the vote.

Reid used a procedural maneuver called “filling the tree,” which allows the majority leader to say a piece of legislation has had all of its possibilities for amendments.

McConnell had tried to offer the president’s job package as an amendment to the China currency legislation, which was being debated in chamber. By “filling the tree,” Reid blocked that move.

Harry Reid has used that “filling the tree” procedural move an unprecedented percentage of the time over the past three years to prevent Republicans from offering amendments to Bills being debated in the Senate, effectively shutting Republicans out of the Bill-creating process. The reason DEMOCRAT Harry Reid refuses to allow Barack Obama’s “jobs” bill to come up for a vote is because he knows with 53 Senators on his side of the aisle, he cannot get 50 votes for it. He most likely cannot get even 46 out of his 53 Senators to vote for the albatross. And Barack Obama needs this piece of campaign propaganda if he wants any chance of winning in 2012, but the Democrat Senators cannot afford to vote on the “jobs” bill if they want any chance of winning in 2012.

The same reason Harry Reid (D – NV) refuses to allow a vote on Obama’s “jobs” bill as Obama presented is the very same reason Harry Reid (D – NV) has refused to even attempt a Federal Budget since April, 2009: he cannot afford to have any Democrats on record because that will cause Democrats to lose elections. It really is that simple.

The Lonely Conservative adds:

Charade? What charade? How is calling for a vote on a bill the president has been demanding Congress vote on right away a charade? Could it be Harry Reid was worried that the Democrats don’t have the votes to pass it?

But that didn’t stop Obama from calling out Eric Cantor in a campaign speech by name, and telling people to demand passage of a bill that he knows is dead in the water. The only thing he left out was to contact any Democrats.

This is getting so old.

I have to disagree with The Lonely Conservative here. It’s not getting old. It’s long past the chunky green milk stage now.

Doug Powers adds some snark value to the truth.

Reid’s doing some heel dragging because he knows he doesn’t have the votes — or possibly the intentional delay is subtle payback for 20 minutes on hold. [referencing Obama’s keeping Senate Democrats waiting on the phone for 20 minutes (elevator music?).]

Meanwhile, President Obama has given up on “pass this jobs bill now” and is settling for “pass it this month.” Next up: “Easter-ish would be good too…”

From Tina Korbe:

Perhaps [Obama] should have saved his censure for Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.). The Senate Majority Leader today refused to allow Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to bring the president’s jobs bill up for a vote.

The way Reid did it was a little wonky. McConnell planned to add the AJA as an amendment to the China currency bill currently under consideration in the Senate. “I wanted to disabuse [Obama] of the notion that somehow we’re unwilling to vote on his proposal,” McConnell said. But Reid “filled the tree,” taking advantage of his right of first recognition and adding so many amendments to the bill that McConnell was unable to tack the AJA to it, too. Reid then even went so far as to accuse McConnell of “obstruction” and engaging in “a political stunt.”

Yes. Senator Harry Reid (D – NV) refuses to allow the Republicans to add Barack Obama’s (D – Prez) “jobs” bill as an amendment to another bill being debated while simultaneously accusing Republicans of “obstruction” when Obama wants to “pass the bill now” and is accusing Republicans of refusing to vote on it. That’s what you call a “pants on fire” lie out of Senator Harry Reid (D – NV).

The whole “jobs” bill is a campaign propaganda stunt. Barack Obama knows it. Harry Reid knows it. House Democrats know it. All the Republicans know it. And now it’s fodder for Republicans to use against Senate Democrats because the Senate Democrats have refused to go on record for or against it, just as they have refused to go on record with a Federal Budget since April, 2009.

Obama Creates Bipartisanship On “Jobs” Bill

Posted by John Hitchcock on 2011/09/16

You read that right, folks. The Obama Administration’s “Jobs” bill has created bipartisanship. So Barack Obama has managed to get bipartisan cooperation after all. But it’s not to Obama’s liking. Obama and his handlers created a bill so poisonous that he knew no Republican would vote for it; every Republican would vote against it. That was his plan and his intention from the start. Obama knows his poll numbers are falling deeper and deeper into the sludge pit and he has to do something, anything, to get the voters’ support to return to him. And what better way than to produce a piece of bile so antithetical to the Republican agenda for the country that all Republicans could then be charged with “putting the party ahead of the country?”

But the whole thing has backfired in a major way for Barack Obama and his radical Leftist cohorts. As I reported Wednesday, Senator Jim Webb (D – VA) whose seat is up in 2012 but is not running for reelection, Senator Tom Carper (D – DE) whose seat is perfectly safe, Senator Mary Landrieu (D – LA) whose seat is not up for reelection this time around are all on record opposing Democrat President Barack Obama’s “jobs” bill. Today, you can add more Democrat Senators who are opposed to the Democrat President’s “jobs” bill plan. Add to that list Senators Mark Begich (D – AK) whose seat is not up, Barbara Mikulski (D – MD) whose seat is one of the safest, Bob Casey (D – PA) who faces stern opposition in his reelection bid.

The Obama Administration, who likes to talk a good game about cooperation and compromise, made it very clear his “jobs” bill is all-or-nothing. Senator Casey’s response?

“I’m afraid if we tried to pass one big bill, I think there’s a lot of skepticism about big pieces of legislation with all kinds of different component parts. We should break this up”, said Casey. He later stated, “Why not have a series of votes on job creation strategies – five votes, 10 votes, I don’t care if it’s 25 votes.”

Obviously if Obama’s poison pill of a “jobs” bill gets broken up, there is no chance that many of the most poisonous parts survive the break-up. And the break-up has Democrat support. As Ed Morrissey said:

“The vast majority”? [quoting David Plouffe] It only takes four of them to keep it from passing on a floor vote, as Democrats only have a 53-47 advantage in the Senate. In the news report itself, there are already enough Democrats objecting to derail it entirely. Mark Begich, Jim Webb, Mary Landrieu, and Barbara Mikulski are all named in this report as opposing the bill. None of them face voters in 2012, having to explain backing tax hikes, massive new spending, and a rerun of the 2009 Porkulus flop. If Mikulski objects to the bill, will Ben Nelson in Nebraska back it? Claire McCaskill in Missouri? Mark Pryor, who has to stand for re-election in Arkansas in 2014? None of the endangered Democrats in the next two cycles will dare vote for $450 billion in new spending to do the exact same thing that didn’t work in 2009.

And quite frankly, this is the very reason Harry Reid won’t bring the bill up for a vote in the Senate. So far, there are 1 in 6 Democrat Senators opposed to it. The whole thing is an unmitigated disaster for Democrats who were looking for a campaign issue. Obama was hoping Democrats would follow him in putting Party over Country, but quite a few Democrats are balking. Whether it’s Country or plain ol’ Survivability, the Democrats are starting to line up in opposition to Obama and in alignment with Republicans.

Thank you, Narcissist in Chief Obama.

HT RS McCain for the video.
